Obvious in hindsight, ignored in practice. A CO2 laser tube produces serious heat and needs proper cooling — typically a water chiller on higher-wattage machines. You also need exhaust or fume extraction for cutting smoke. Both have facility implications: water supply, drains, ducting, and electrical load.
In March 2024, a client's Boss Laser cutting machine arrived and was installed 36 hours before their production deadline. Everything was set — except the building didn't have a water line for the chiller. We scrambled, paid $900 for a recirculating chiller and emergency installation, and barely made the deadline. Boss Laser machines generally support LightBurn and RDWorks, and they can integrate with CorelDRAW. But "generally" is not a specification. Check the controller model in the spec sheet, then check that controller's current compatibility list. If your team uses a niche CAD program or older file formats, test the workflow before you commit — not after the crate is open.
This is the step that bit us hardest. We assumed a machine would work with a client's file preparation workflow. It did — after a firmware update, a $450 adapter, and 24 hours of debugging. In the rush-order world, 24 hours is the difference between a customer who renews and one who doesn't. Oh, and that $450? Nobody budgeted for it.
5. Read the spec sheet, not the sales page

That spreadsheet is how I caught a machine that looked identical to the demo unit we'd tested. Same series, same photos, but a different controller. The demo ran fine. 6. Scope OEM and wholesale terms before you ask for pricing
If you're a laser engraving machine distributor, or you're planning to private-label or resell, this step is for you. Know the OEM/wholesale terms before you spec the machine. What's the minimum order quantity? Is custom branding included in the unit price, or is it a separate setup fee? What's the warranty on private-label machines?
We built a $15,000 client order on the assumption that custom branding was included in the base price. It wasn't. The OEM customization added $3,500 and pushed the schedule by two weeks. The manufacturer charges for what they do, and that is entirely fair. The mistake was ours for assuming.
7. Confirm parts availability and support response time
Laser machines aren't buy-and-forget equipment. Tubes wear out, lenses and mirrors need cleaning or replacement, controllers occasionally fail. The question isn't whether you'll need parts. It's how quickly you can get them.
Ask what maintenance parts are stocked and what the typical ship time is. Based on our internal data, machines with faster parts support ran about 95% uptime; machines that required longer shipping sat closer to 80%. For a shop with production commitments, that difference is a week of downtime. And a week of downtime is the difference between a planned order and an emergency.
Three Mistakes I Still See
Even with a checklist, I watch people make the same errors:
- Trusting model numbers. The LS-1630 and LS-2440 differ in more than bed size. Check tube options, machine weight, and power requirements too.
- Skipping first-run calibration. Delivery isn't the finish line. Run test cuts, adjust focus and speed, and confirm the machine's behavior before production depends on it. Five minutes of verification beats five days of correction.
- Forgetting the machine is part of a system. Chiller, exhaust, air assist, and a solid table all affect performance. Leave one out and the laser doesn't perform, no matter how carefully you chose the specs.
